Can I do all things?

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

For many years, I've heard this verse being used to bring encouragement and hope to those that are struggling or facing trials difficult to bear. Yet, if you look at the scriptures surrounding verse 13, vv.10-16, you will see how the Apostle Paul thanked the Philippians for providing for him. In v.10, he even mentions that he knew they wanted to provide and were not able to. He knew that others cared for him and were concerned about him. How encouraging to know others care.

I am not saying that Christ does not strengthen us, but where do we see Christ at His best? In His church. Being around fellow believers in Christ strengthens us. As human beings, a response when things get tough can sometimes be to withdraw, seclude, even separate ourselves from those who love and care for us. We may even want to act as if though all things are "fine".

Well, I'm here to share with you, the only way we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, is to pray, build a relationship with Jesus and surround ourselves with the support of individuals that love Jesus too (His church). Remember, Jesus had his disciples, He sent them out two by two, Moses had his brother Aaron, David had the prophet Nathan, Abraham took his family and his nephew when the Lord commanded him to leave his home.

All these men spoke with God directly. Yet God surrounded them with others that would help and support them when battles, struggles, or correction came their way. I believe that if these great men of the Bible did not have the support of others, the journey may have been a lot tougher. The battles may have been a lot harder. The apostle Paul was brave and humble enough to ask for provision when it was needed. So, can I or you do all things through Christ who strengthens us? Yes! Absolutely, but not alone.

Have a blessed New Year,

Monica
